Theme Celebrations

At the end of each Reading theme, Room 123 will have a celebration to remember and celebrate the theme topic.  Students need to complete all requirements for the theme, such as book reports and writing projects.  Here is an overview of the Theme Celebrations.

bulletJourneys: We will take a pretend journey to the beach by rolling out a beach towel, dressing in shorts, lathering up with sun tan oil and pretending.  We will feast on "sand"wich cookies and ice cream.
bulletAmerican Stories: We will have an International Luncheon served on fancy tablecloths with international/American foods.
bulletThat's Amazing: We will push back the chairs and desks and lay down sleeping bags. You will share your stories that you have written.  We will make s'mores to eat and read.
bulletProblem Solvers Students can bring a sleeping bag and bring their PJ's to change to at school.  We will share our book projects and of course there will be a snack.
bulletHeroes: Can you play the piano...or twirl a baton, leap like a rabbit or sing a great song?  Well, practice and show off your talent at the theme celebration.

Clean Desk Fairy

Keep a clean desk and you will be visited frequently from the Clean Desk Fairy.   Here is what she looks for:

bulletBooks and folders in two neat stacks.
bulletAll school supplies in pencil box or pouch placed between book stacks.
bulletTwo sharpened pencils in desk tray ready to go for class.
bulletNo loose papers. No pencil or eraser shavings in front of desk.
bulletPoetry all tucked away neatly in binder.
bulletPoetry binder is in chair pocket. It is the ONLY thing in the chair pocket!

Don't be left behind without a treat.  Always keep your desk area neat!

Class Quilt

During the second half of the school year, we will begin making a class quilt.  Each student will sew their own block by hand.  The blocks will be signed by the student and then sewn into the quilt top.  Then each student will have an opportunity to quilt their block on an antique quilt frame.

The making of the quilt will tie into the curriculum in several areas.  In math, measuring and fractions will be involved. Quilting will also be a source of real life math problem solving in the areas of perimeter, geometry, and area.  In social studies, quilt-making ties into the history of Pennsylvania as well as the history of women.  Besides the curriculum aspects, quilt making teaches basic sewing skills which are handy for anyone to have.  In addition to  all these things, lessons in patience, team work, taking pride in one's work are sometimes acquired as an added bonus.  For more information on the curriculum standards involved, click on the Class Quilt link above, and scroll down to Standards.
