James Whitcomb Riley

Poetry Pages Volume 9:

We read several poems by James Whitcomb Riley.  His most famous one is Little Orphant Annie.  Riley wrote poems in rural dialect.  We experimented with writing in our kid's dialect.  The topics were varied.

The Story of Jack and Jill

Have you heard the story of Jack and Jill?
Well here’s my story of Jill and Jack.

By the way my name is Zack.

There was a kid named Bill on the hill and he pushed Jack down and…

You know the rest now.

The Creepy Guy

What is that noise?

I’m not go’in to see.

Whoever you are,

you must flee.

He began to come out.

Then there was a shout.

Who could it be?

            I must go see.

I don’t believe in scary things especially vampires with fangs.

There’s something wrong with my head, but this is all what he said.

“I’m over the mountains and the trees too, so you better watch out or I”ll get you.

I’m invisible like an invisible man.

I’ll catch you.

I’ll catch you as soon as I can.

Look up or look down, or you can even turn around.

I’ll be there, I’ll be there in all space. I’ll be there. I’ll be there in all places.

I’m like a scary monster under your bed. If you look at me once or twice,

I’ll be two eyes roll the dice.

My hands feel so solid rock

that you will have to see Mrs. Doc.

Mess with me. Mess with me. Do all you can do. Don’t worry I’ll come for you.

If you see me on the street or on the creek, it won’t be easy to sneak.

I am the creepy guy.

I’m the King of them all,

But all I say is if you see me,

do me a favor and don’t fall.

Signed,

            Creepy Guy  (Emani)

Eattcher breakfast, ev’ry morning.

Scaredy Green Man

We went to a house with a scardy screem man giving out candy and tweets.

My freinds said I’m too scardy to go up to that man

but I said I’m not scardy

no I’m not scady so I went went up to that man

but ran back scremming I’m too scardy.

I wanna see colorful leaves falling,

I wanna watch the kids runnin’ fast.

You better gimmie candy

or the ghosts will get cha ef you don’t watch out!

An’ have you heard the story ‘bout the kid who gone wild?
