Blood Lab# 3 Blood Spatter Lab

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to create blood spatter from various distances and angles.  The purpose of the lab is to match blood spatter from a crime scene to known blood spatter patterns.

Part A Procedure: Creating Blood Spatter Standards

Blood Spatter distances at 90 degrees:

  1. Go outdoors-take newspapers, meter stick and metric ruler. Spread four sheets of newspaper across level ground.
  2. Dip a plastic knife in the fake blood. Holding the knife at a height of 12 inches, walk across the newspaper so that 6 drops of the “blood” fall on the paper. Label the drops “12 inches at 90 degrees” .
  3. Using 4 more newspapers, repeat step #1 but at a distance of 24 inches.
  4. Repeat steps #1-2 at distances of 36” and 42”. This will always be at 90 degrees.

5.      Measure the diameter of each drop, calculate average the drops for each

Distance. Record the average diameter in the data table.

Blood Spatter on a slope:

  1. On steps: Determine the angle of the slope using a string and protractor. Record the slope angle in your data table.
  2. On steep hill: Determine the angle of the slope using a string and protractor. Record the slope angle in your data table.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 , using a distance of 42” , record the results.

  Part B Procedure:

Comparing blood spatter from the crime scene:

  1. Your teacher will give you a piece of a blood stained newspaper from the crime scene.
  2. Analyze the stain by comparing it to our spatter pattern standards.
  3. Using 4 more newspapers, repeat step #1 but at a distance of 24 inches.
  4. Repeat steps #1-2 at distances of 36” and 42”. This will always be at 90 degrees.
