SAMPLE QUESTION -- and answer
The internet is a network of networks that connects computers across America
and all around the world. The internet began in the U.S. Department of Defense around
1969. The idea was to test wide area (long distance) computer networks for science
and military personnel. The network had to work for all people without regard to
location or different computer types. In addition, the network had to function even
if portions of it went down (e.g. nuclear disaster, war, hurricane, etc.) The internet
began when any one computer (a node) was connected to all other computers but
without a central authority. The path that a message took would be irrelevant.
All that mattered was that computer A in one location could send/receive a message
to computer B in another location.
The experiment (originally known as ARPAnet --Advanced Research Projects
Network) was successful and now includes millions of computers everywhere from
schools, universities and government to private homes and industry. This powerful
medium serves two important purposes: information retrieval and worldwide
communication. The internet is interactive, global and immediate. Think of television.
Although it can send us images in real time, it lacks interactivty (at least so far it
does). The internet offers unlimited potential!
